Trump doesn’t want to hear tape of ‘vicious’ Khashoggi murder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Mr . trump said he doesn’t want to hear an audio recording within the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi despite facing mounting pressure to punish Saudi Arabia for the killing.

Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, and Turkey has provided the U.S. government a recording of the murder, but Trump said he previously not see it “as it would be a suffering tape, this is a terrible tape.”

“I’d rather not hear the tape, no reason to hear the tape,” Trump said in an interview with “Fox News Sunday.”

“I do know all that began from the tape without the need to read it … It was actually very violent, very vicious and terrible.”

Trump also said he needs to sustain a close alliance with Saudi Arabia despite Khashoggi’s death and questioned the alleged role of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, that is called MbS as well as being the kingdom’s de facto ruler.

“He explained he had absolutely nothing to employ it,” Trump said, adding that “many people” also said the crown prince didn’t have comprehension of the killing.

The interview was taped on Friday, hours before government sources said the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had briefed the Trump administration within the murder along with its belief that MbS ordered it.

Trump said on Saturday which the CIA assessment was “very premature” also in the job interview that aired on Sunday he stated it might don’t be a possibility to know who ordered Khashoggi’s murder.

Trump faces intense pressure from senior Democratic and Republican lawmakers to take tougher action against Saudi Arabia. Some have said Trump should suspend arms sales towards kingdom and drop his support for MbS, but Trump has up to now resisted that pressure.

The administration on Thursday imposed economic sanctions on 17 Saudi officials regarding their alleged role within the killing, they failed to target the Saudi government.

Saudi Arabia can be a major oil supplier and a close ally of the usa in countering Iranian power at the center East.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a ally of Trump, said on Sunday he’d without doubt about MbS’ involvement in ordering the murder of Khashoggi. ?

“There’re a very important ally but when you’re looking at the crown prince, he’s irrational, he’s unhinged but he’s done a lot of injury to the partnership (between) the country and Saudi Arabia. And i also don’t have goal dealing with him anymore,” he stated on NBC’s “Fulfill the Press.”
