Malta police identify suspected journalist murder masterminds: report

VALLETTA (Reuters) – Investigators have identified a gaggle of at the very least three Maltese nationals who believe that masterminded the killing of anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia 13 months ago, The Sunday Times during the Malta reported on Sunday.

It would not reveal their names, but quoted high-ranking officers leading the murder probe as stating their investigation was at a “very advanced stage”.

There wasn’t official comment with the police on the report, however, a police source said the story was not right.

“It is far from as it would be reported, no … we’ve not realized who is behind it yet,” dealing with, who were briefed in the senior level to the investigation, told Reuters.

Separately, Caruana Galizia’s sister, Corinne Vella, told Reuters the “family weren’t formally informed by police that your suspected masterminds ended up being identified”.

The sources quoted by The Sunday Times during the Malta gave no indication of the way for a longer time the analysis could take or maybe there was any new arrests in the event.

Caruana Galizia, who penned an anti-corruption blog, was killed with a car bomb at the Maltese capital Valletta in October 2017 – a murder that appalled Europe and raised doubts about the rule of law to the Mediterranean island.

A court documenting initial evidence from the trio has heard evidence them to allegedly planted a bomb in Caruana Galizia’s car as well as set it off with the SMS message.

The motive behind the murder remains unknown, together with the Sunday Times saying the investigators believe the masterminds had different motives and gathered to contract several men accused.

The newspaper sources would not give any suggestion of regardless of if the masterminds originated the criminal, business or political sectors.

Investigators were quoted as saying they were in constant contact with Europol C the EU’s police officers agency C in the case, plus in recent weeks this contact intensified significantly as police got far better cracking the truth.

“There is also a lots of data that really needs analyzing and partners like Europol develop the necessary experience and expertise to assist facilitate this method,” a source told the newspaper.
